While SSDs and HDDs both store your data, the underlying technology is completely different — and so is the recovery process when something goes wrong.
Mechanical vs Electronic Failure
HDDs rely on spinning platters and moving read/write heads, so most failures are mechanical. SSDs have no moving parts, so failures usually stem from controller chips, firmware corruption, or NAND flash wear.
The TRIM Challenge
SSDs use a command called TRIM to permanently erase deleted data blocks for performance reasons — meaning deleted files can become genuinely unrecoverable much faster on an SSD than an HDD. If you suspect data loss on an SSD, power it down immediately.
Recovery Techniques
HDD recovery often involves clean-room head or platter repairs. SSD recovery frequently requires reading raw NAND chips directly when the controller has failed — a process called chip-off recovery.
